News from the Farm – September 3, 2011

It’s the end of August. September is upon us! After this week’s box there are SIX more weeks of the CSA.
We spent Saturday afternoon and evening at Green Toe Ground Farm up in Celo. As part of the educational experience for our interns we tour another farm once a month. Green Toe is a biodynamic farm which incorporates animals into its operation. And as it is right on the Toe River, has one of the best swimming holes around! It’s always great to see how other farmers farm, hear about their successes and challenges.

We’re still doing some weeding, planting, and sowings. We’d really like to get a couple of fields cleaned up and ready for the winter cover crops. We still have two weeks to get that done, but there always seems to be other projects keeping us away. Hey! Next Monday is Labor Day and there’s no better day to do a little labor on the Farm! We’ll be working away and would love to have a big crew to get a lot accomplished. Let us know if you’d like to come out.

The little orange peppers in the box this week are sweet with a little heat to them.. If you remove all the seeds they don’t have much heat at all. Tasty. The Green Mountain potatoes have been the taste test winner here on the farm year after year. This year, however, they have a little ‘scab’ on them, unsightly spots that most often are superficial, but at times may extent into the potato a little, just cut away the infected area.
