News from the Farm – October 10, 2015

This is the LAST week for the regular share!!

thankyou

We want to thank all of you for your support over the course of this season. Overall, we feel it’s been a great success. There were, of course, gaps in production and unexpected disease issues tha hindered our best efforts. We hope that all of you enjoyed the produce and the overall experience of joining our farm’s CSA.

Well, the rain at eh end of last week and over the weekend could have been worse. We did receive about 8 inches of rain over a four day period. For the most part the vegetables looks good, with the disappointing exception of the spinach and arugula. They did not appreciate all the water and have turned an unpleasant yellow. Some plants just can’t handle having their roots really wet for a prolonged period. Other than that the only other issue from all that rain are the weeds! Boy did they love it. A week or so ago we were feeling very pleased with the look of the farm, it looked good. Now any bare ground is under a blanket of little green weeds. It makes us a little sick to our stomachs looking at it. There’s a lot more work in our future dealing with this new mess.

We harvest the sorghum cane on Monday. That was a job. Most of the cane had fallen over with all the rain, so it was a real bear taking all the leaves off the stalks. We the leaves came off, the cane was cut at ground level and put in piles that we then hauled to our truck and piled it all in the back. It all just barely fit and the truck is definitely feeling the weight of it all. I guess that many of you will not get to share in the sorghum syrup this season. We won’t be cooking down the juice for another couple of weeks. But we should have some at market by the end of the month and into November & December.

The boxes we use for the CSA shares are waxed and are not recyclable, but we do reuse them. So PLEASE remember to BRING THEM BACK next week.

Ideas for Cooking

The greatest delight the fields and woods minister is the suggestion of an occult relation between man and the vegetable. I am not alone and unacknowledged. They nod to me and I to them. Ralph Waldo Emerson

COOKBOOKS FOR BEGINNERS – These make good gifts for folks learning to cook and I think, should be in every kitchen, to be at least, a source of basic information. The day my mother married, she had never cooked a meal in her life. She could of used one of these books listed below.

The Joy of Cooking
The Fannie Farmer Cookbook
Julia Child’s Kitchen
The Best Recipe – from Cook’s Illustrated magazine
