News from the Farm – June 4, 2016

Lindsey atop one of a few loads of square bales.

It’s JUNE! We had a huge Thursday last week. I mentioned that all the farmers in our valley were baling hay last week. Our field was cut and baled into square bales as well. So we had to get all those bales (about 200) out of the field and into the barn. What a job that is! See the picture below…

We’re starting to take out old spring beds now. The spring greens are making their exits. The fall planted onions have all been pulled and are drying up in the loft of the barn (another fairly big/heavy job). The spring starts out with us working in one field, now we have five fields planted out and will start planting in the sixth very soon. We’re about to plant the first round of sweet corn, the popcorn, and sorghum (which we make into molasses in the fall). The first of two plantings of melons will go out in the next week or so as well. The winter squash that we sowed last week has all sprouted. There are romano beans growing away. We pulled a few potato plants to see if progress was being made. We ate the progress for lunch, some really lovely tiny new potatoes. We’re starting to harvest a descent amount of summer squash and the first of the cucumbers as well. All those vegetables will start making appearances in your boxes in the next week or two.

We had a HUGE day on Thursday. We planted 11 beds of vegetables and flowers: 2 beds of sweet corn, 2 of popcorn, 1 bed of lettuce, a bed of sunflowers, a bed of melons, and sowed two beds of sorghum, a bed of beets and a bed of carrots. We also trellised the beans, mowed down some old beds and disced them under. And a few other things. What a day!

Please return your CSA box next week. These boxes are waxed and are not recyclable, but we reuse them. So PLEASE remember to bring them back next week.

Ideas for Cooking

(We want to thank long time CSA member John Loyd for providing ideas and inspiration in this section!!!)

“All gardeners know better than other gardeners.” Chinese proverb
When olive oil is refereed to in the weekly recopies, it is always extra virgin.

Pepper is always meant to be fresh ground.

You should have your herbs planted by now. If not, there is still time. Pick a sunny place and plant your favorites. They grow well here. Basil would like some shade if you have a partially shaded spot.
