News from the Farm – June 29, 2013

Mulching squash and cucumbers.

A new little toad, hatched out form our pond, patrolling the fields for little bigs to eat.

It’s officially Summer!

It seems we’ve found ourselves in the summer pattern of thunderstorms every afternoon. Monday afternoon we were out mulching the spaces between winter squash beds with our newly cut hay. It was HOT and muggy. One of those thunderstorms came through the valley, we watched it approach over the western mountains, and cooled us right down. We got completely soaked as we worked, but it sure felt good.

WIth the heat comes some rapidly growing crops and weeds. We’re transitioning away from spring crops towards summer ones, as we plan and start to sow some of the fall crops. It’s a busy time! The garlic will come out of the ground, possibly next week. The last of the over-wintering crops to be harvested. On this week’s farm walk Vanessa and the crew dug up a small “new” potato. Those spuds are growing! The spring planted onions are starting to get ready as well. As I was making the harvest list Monday night, I was struggling to figure out what there was out in the fields. There is often a “surprise” waiting for me as we start the harvest. This week it was the leeks. I had forgotten about the leeks, but there they were ready to head into your boxes.

Please return your CSA box next week. These boxes are waxed and are not recyclable, but we reuse them. So PLEASE remember to bring them back next week.
