We’re on the ASAP Farm Tour this weekend the 25th & 26th of June.

Well, we enjoyed the cooler weather last week, but we’re back to the heat and very dry weather of a few weeks ago. It is REALLY dry out there in the fields. We’re irrigating every few days to keep little plants alive and bigger plants growing. Despite the lack of rain the weeds have continued to grow and we spent basically ALL day on Monday saving a bed go beets and carrots from being over run by weeds. Mission accomplished, though it took real commitment from all of us. The potatoes were planted a little earlier this spring than we usually do, so they’re starting to really get big. On Tuesday we put the potato digger on the tractor and dug two beds of beautiful potatoes! Some great things about having the potatoes earlier are far fewer weeds to contend with and, hey, we have potatoes way earlier! In the past weeds were always a huge bother when harvesting the tubers. The weeds would clog the digger every 20 feet or so, making the process long and bothersome. Yesterday’s dig went so smoothly, bringing all the potatoes to the surface quickly and easily. As we dug the potatoes we noticed that the spring planted onions are almost ready for harvest as well. There are LOTS of them. LOTS. Sweet, Red, Yellow, and White.

We’re about to start sowing the fall greens in the greenhouse! Crazy, but true. It seems like we’ve just gotten started and we’re already having to turn our attention to the fall. At this time of year we’re basically working to maintain all the summer crops, as well as continue to plant successions of lettuces, beets & carrots, sunflowers, and a few others. Now we start thinking about the fall, in terms of starting the plants in the greenhouse and readying the field were they are going to be planted. Lots of moving pieces to the farm puzzle at this time of year.

Please return your CSA box next week. These boxes are waxed and are not recyclable, but we reuse them. So PLEASE remember to bring them back next week.

Ideas for Cooking

(We want to thank long time CSA member John Loyd for providing ideas and inspiration in this section!!!)

Now is a good time to plant your second crop of arugula. Radishes too.
