Jessica getting down with the cucumber harvest

They're starting!

They’re starting!

We have a great crew this season. Every year is different on the farm, from the weather, diseases, insects, but a huge part of how our farm runs lands on the shoulders of our interns. We try to provide them an interesting and educational work environment, and they provide the labor and good will that allows the farm to function. This is our 16th year with interns. We’ve had all kinds over the years, good ones, bad ones, great ones. Many we are still in touch with, and quite a few are still farming or gardening as part of their professional life. So it’s really nice when we realize that our crew for the season is working out, and working well. The work we do is quite hard, maybe not on any given day, but working with our bodies day in and day out for 9 months or so straight is hard. To do the work with a smile, telling stories, puns, or jokes as we go makes all the difference. So we’re super happy this season, because our crew is GREAT.

After last week’s planting bonanza, we’re concentrating on weeds and other small projects that had to be looked over as we pushed to get everything in the ground last week. So we’re trellising beans, tomatoes, and dahlias; mulching between winter squash, cucumber, summer squash, and pepper beds; and fixing a broken trailer, irrigation pump, support beam in the barn, & tractor. If there’s something that can break, it will.

Best Wishes to every one. Have a wonderful week end!

Please return your CSA box next week. These boxes are waxed and are not recyclable, but we reuse them. So PLEASE remember to bring them back next week.

Ideas for Cooking

(We want to thank long time CSA member John Loyd for providing ideas and inspiration in this section!!!)

I recently bought a pound of lard at the Saturday farmer’s market from Hickory Nut Gap Farm. After years, lard has returned, being long feared and misrepresented. The true villain, the one that will kill you, are carbohydrates. Enough said… there’s more on the web if you want to look at the science. Good recipes are abounding, so give it a thought. It will make a difference.
