News from the Farm – August 11, 2012

Hi everyone,

I hope this email finds you well. This is second-year intern Sanaz writing to you from
Full Sun—Alex and Vanessa send their regards from sunny California . Here on the farm, we’re all wishing they would send a little of the sunshine, too, because our week by ourselves has already been quite a wet one. A pounding rain on Friday afternoon sent a bit of a mudslide through the fields, and continued afternoon showers haven’t been particularly good news for the winter squash, the melons, or the tomatoes. (Not that you would be able to tell by the tomatoes—we’ve literally got hundreds of pounds to sort through on harvest days!)

Be all that as it may, our spirits haven’t been dampened. The camaraderie among the interns is holding up under the demands of running the farm ourselves. At this time last year, I was still very new, and then second-year intern Maggie pretty much handled all of the details. This year, we’ve dissipated the stress by all working together to make decisions. (And everyone has been very gracious in answering my questions with the affirmation I need.) It also helps that much of the major fall planting was done last week, taking some of the pressure off; our to-do list feels very manageable.

Looking forward to seeing you all at market,

Sanaz, Katie, Dianna, Christine, and Philip
