News from Farm:

We planted kale, cauliflower and broccoli on Monday! The farm is transitioning again. Fall crops are going in. Our late beds of beets, carrots are being direct seeded. The colors are deepening (see zinnias above!) More beds are being harvested and turned under than are being replanted. It isn't quite light at 6 am any more. It feels like we have reached the plateau part of the season. We still have 5 more months of market and there is lots more planting and harvesting to do but shift towards fall is happening.

Below: Fall crops in the ground!

Popcorn is getting so tall!

What's available this week??

I think this week is a repeat of what we had last week: Lettuces and lettuce mix, green beans, cucumbers, summer squash, red, heirloom, cherry and cocktail tomatoes, rainbow Swiss chard, basil, parsley, three kinds of onions, 4 kinds of potatoes, Italian eggplant, sunflowers, dahlias, mixed bouquets. At market, we'll have all the above plus small amount of blueberries, more varieties of flowers and eggplants. Thanks for your continued support!

John's Recipe of the Week

Week August 2, 2021

It is the peak of the season here in Western NC. Almost everything that comes from the ground, bush or tree is at the weekly markets. You have many choices when buying, and when we shop, we like to think about just what goes in our bags. At the risk of sound preachy, here is something to look at.

EWG has been testing food for contamination for a long time and their information is worthy of consideration. What you do with their information is, always up to you. We feel you should eat well, local, fresh and sourced, when possible, from folks you know who grow safely.

THE DIRTY DOZEN – Here is the 2021 list of the most contaminated foods ranked by just how bad they are. Until 1947 all food was organic.

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Kale, collards on most greens
  4. Nectarines
  5. Apples
  6. Grapes
  7. Cherries
  8. Peaches
  9. Pears
10 Bell and hot pepper
11 Celery
12 Tomatoes

Raisins – EWG tested 670 raisin samples and found 99% testing positive for a least two pesticides. One average, each was contaminated with more than 13 pesticides. And even some organic samples were contaminated. EWG was concerned, because some of the pesticides can harm brain and reproductive development in children.

There is more information available about raisins and food on the EWG.org site, which you can review and then make decisions on what you want to eat and what foods you feel OK about.
