Hellebores just starting to bloom

News from the farm...

Just as a reminder: the pre-order plants sale closes March 15th. Don't forget to reserve your summer seedlings and make sure you aren’t disappointed!

CSA memberships are available. These shares are a win-win. You get a good return on your investment, no matter what the size of your share and you help support this farm and local agricutture through the lean spring months.

We welcomed our first apprentice of the season to the farm last week. Al comes to us from New Jersey and has previously been a musician and worked in the tech industry. He is in the process of building a tiny house on his land out here in Sandy Mush. So we are also welcoming a new neighbor. Welcome Al!

What are we doing on the farm now?

This is a big time for working in the greenhouse, sowing seeds and stepping up little seedlings into bigger pots. So far we have sown onions, 6 kinds of lettuce, lettuce mix, three kinds of kale, a lot of different kinds of tomatoes, snap peas, swiss chard, spinach, 3 kinds of eggplant, 5 kinds of peppers. On the docket for the end of this week are cucumber and summer squash. What?!! Our first planting of cucurbits goes out mid-April. We cover it with two sometimes three layers of row cover and then cross our fingers. I can't believe mid-April is only 5 weeks away!

We have also sown some of our early flowers but have yet to receive our flower seed order that was placed in January! It has been a wild ride with seeds this spring. We got at least 10 different shipments from Johnny's from one single order as they struggle with supply, super high demand and fewer workers because of Covid. The same is going for our flower seed supplier. We are crossing our figures that they will finally arrive this week and are glad that we have plenty of perennial plantings and that our overwintered flowers are looking great.

The cat tunnels are back up and planted with greens and the first round of lettuce/lettuce mix. (pictured below) We are hoping it stays a little warmer so we can have these for opening day of the North Asheville Tailgate Market and our first box delivery, April 3!

NC opened up vaccination for farmers and farm workers (and lots of other essential workers) on March 3! I think that is light at the end of the tunnel!

Thanks for reading and best wishes.
