Moon set over the mountains

News from the farm...

Hello from out in Sandy Mush. We hope this finds you healthy and warm as we bundle up through these first days of February.

We have had a good rest over the last month or so, enjoying the fire, taking long walks, spending (socially distanced) time with family and friends. Seeds, potting mix, compost, fertilizer, row cover, pots are all ordered or soon to be ordered. We are happy to say that Sam, our assistant farm manager, is back with us again and we are busy interviewing prospective apprentices to round out our crew. In short, we are getting ready to get out there and get growing food and flowers for you again.

We hope that you will sign up for one of our CSA market shares again. Last year, your CSA shares and online pre-orders made all the difference for us and it is looking like we will be working with the same market restrictions for at least the first few months of the tailgate market season.

We will be selling our produce and cut flowers through the online farm store and at our tailgate markets, with pick ups at the farm, at Cecilia's Kitchen and at our markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. By signing up for the CSA, you help us pay for all those early season up front expenses and get yourself a healthy discount on all our delicious produce, beautiful flowers and plant starts.

Speaking of plants starts, would any one be interested in pre-ordering your plant starts before March 7th or so? We are thinking to open up the online store for this so you all can be sure to get the plants you want and we can be sure to grow enough of what you all need. Drop us an email if that sounds appealing.

What's growing now?

Overwintering onions are braving the wind and snow and looking good (top photo). The strawberries too are holding their own and are just starting to put out new growth. One of the first outside jobs will be to weed those beds so the plants can really take off when it warms up.

The overwintering flowers in our high tunnels are looking amazing, best ever on the snapdragons. We will be loaded with blooms come April and May. I, for one, am looking forward to that!

We are also experimenting with a couple of late sown beds of beets and carrots that will hopefully be ready at the beginning of April. They are looking happy right now, small but sturdy and unaffected by the cold. (2nd photo down) We will need the beds that they are in by mid- April so we can plant our tomatoes. Fingers crossed that they size up by then.

Snapdragon looking fabulous!
